Spirit Creations – Hospitality

The hospitality class has been part of the programming at Nbisiing Secondary School for several years.  In the past, it has been a self-sustaining course where profits made in the canteen went directly into purchasing supplies.  The canteen was operated on average, 4 times a month, more, later in the semester.

As a result of funding from a proposal to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the students will set up, market and sell products that they make in the kitchen.  They will set up and operate a canteen which will be run on a daily basis from our kitchen.  They will be responsible for the business from beginning to end.  They will also cater smaller events in the Nipissing community.  Thirdly, the students will sell baked goods on consignment to local on-reserve businesses.

The kitchen will outfitted using some of the funding.  The canteen will also be set up with a mini canteen in the student lounge that will include more healthful foods.

Detailed Workplan

The Nbisiing Secondary School “Nbisiing Spirit Creations” program will implement a two package (four credits-if they take co-op education) daily from 8:50 a.m. to 10:10 a.m.  where the students will learn how to write their business plans.  We will be drawing from the expertise of our partners to provide a number of workshops in business plan development.  Then, from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. the students will branch out to either their Fashion/Crafts program or to their Hospitality/Culinary program to gain the hands on experience.  The students will be introduced to enterprising principles within our education system creating excitement about entrepreneurship among aboriginal youth.  This will be done by including Elders as our advisors/teacher/mentors and using a variety of resource people for their classes.  They will be developing unique products for sale or learning how to prepare foods and run their canteen.  In the afternoon, the students will also be able to participate actively in community businesses on a daily basis through a work experience, job shadowing or cooperative education placement.

Synopsis:

Over the next two years Nbisiing Secondary School will implement a unique program designed to spark the entrepreneurial spirit with a cultural component.  Aboriginal students from Nipissing First Nation as well other communities will register for the program.  Community Elders will be invited to share their wealth of knowledge and wisdom where they will assist and teach the students.  The students will develop a business plan and implement the plan.  Another component of the program includes participating in job shadowing and cooperative education placements where they will learn how business owners operate small business.
